To the editor:
The Darien Sail & Power Squadron’s Boat/Camp/2015 was held Friday, July 31, at Noroton Yacht Club.
Many of the campers were recipients of a Campership award from Person-to-Person — a program that allows a safe summer camping experience for children from low-income families.
Boat owners from the Darien Sail & Power Squadron were joined by volunteers from the community of local boaters, as well as other civic organizations eager to present the kids with a fine day on the water. Campers visited the Norwalk Seaport Associations’ Sheffield Island, toured nearby harbors and encountered (friendly) Pirates anchored in a cove — who strongly resembled members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
A tally of the number of volunteers involved on the water, and on shore, is more than 90 people: boat captains, boat crew, on-shore support, and community volunteers. The list of these volunteers is given below, with apologies to anyone who was missed!
Boating and shore-based crew included: Peter Adler, PJ Adler, David Amble, Chuck Andrae, Ed Barksdale, John Bassler, Sam Bridges, Steve Buckles, Parker Buckles, Michael Crofton, Kevin Cullinan, David Dever, Fred Elliott, Pam Elliott, Charlie England, Jeff Eng, David Genovese, Jeff Gerwig, Wilder Gleason, Kip Hewitt, Ewan Johnson, Paul Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Simon Johnson, Peter Kelly, Frank Kemp, Gill Kernan, Kim Kernan, Bob Lamkin, John Mackie, Gebby McDonald, Sandy McDonald, Eautha Munkelwitz, Becky Munro, Dougal Munro, Ron Neilson, Jane Nestler, Theo Osgood, Dale Pollart, Gerry Raasch, Susan Ryan, Angus Sandison, Rory Sandison, AJ Scolaro, Timmy Scolaro, Sarah Seelye, Per Sekse, John Steger, Randy Tankoos, Jim Walsh, Carol Wilson, Rande Wilson, and Peter Wilson.
Volunteers from Person-to-Person included: Andy Anorga, Claire Borecki, Kim Collibee, Megan Dunn, Kimberlie Dupiton, Allison Frattaroli, Faith Grey, Katie Jarrett, Judy Kilmartin, Janet King, Ceci Maher, Mirlanda Marcisse, Alisson Meza, Kat McDermott, Sophie Neumann, Nina Rodruguez, Maureen Sheehan, Joshua Stevenson, Pam Ha-Stevenson, Jolanda Sutherland, Isabel Sutherland, and Marina Thomas.
The Noroton Fire Department Fireboat (Marine Unit 34) was captained by Jamie Hunter and crewed by Jim Degnan and Grayson Smith. The Fireboat provided a splendid stream of water from its high volume pump, and the campers’ boats went under the spray (several times!).
The Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol boat, with served double duty as a Pirate liar, was captained by Joe Defranco, coordinated by Ginny Lovas, and crewed by Phyllis and Bernard Camarro, Joe Lovas, Greg Miller and Joe Moreyn. Maureen Sheehan of Person-to-Person did double duty as photographer and pirate!
Photographers include Joanna Bridges, John Amarilios and Maureen Sheehan.
Boat/Camp is just one of the public service activities sponsored by the Darien Sail & Power Squadron. Further information concerning the Darien Sail & Power Squadron is available at their web-site at dsps.darien.org Information on the Campership program may be obtained by contacting Ceci Maher, executive director of Person-to-Person, at 655-0048 (www.p2pdarien.org).
Again, thanks go to the entire list of volunteers who made Boat/Camp/2015 a success.
