Darien teachers have been getting a bad rap lately, and it is one that they certainly do not deserve. After all, Darien Public Schools are consistently rated as one of the best public school systems in the country.

I know just how superb so many of Darien Public Schools' teachers are because many of them inspired and motivated me to set my goals higher and go further in this world. Let's all stand with Matt Pavia, Darien High School's English Department chairman, who recently wrote a letter to the editor calling for support of Darien's teachers and share our stories of some incredible Darien educators who work so hard every day to provide their students with the very best education. Here's my story of my sixth- and eighth-grade English teacher, Trisha Mears.

I would not be the writer I am today, nor would I be at Georgetown University today, if it were not for Mrs. Mears. While I had her many years ago in middle school, a lot of what she taught me about the English language has stuck with me to this very day. She did not just teach me about English. She also taught me to work harder because she saw potential in me that I did not know I had.

Not only was I blessed to have Mrs. Mears as my English teacher, but my sister also had her as a teacher. While my sister and I have very different learning styles, Mrs. Mears adapted her teaching style to make sure that my sister was able to learn just as much I did. Thank you, Mrs. Mears, and thank you to all Darien Public School teachers for all you do to ensure that students receive the highest quality education.
