Michael Refalo, 50, of Winsted was arrested on Nov. 30 on charges of sixth-degree criminal attempt to larceny, possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said the charges involved an attempted shoplifting incident at the CVS Pharmacy, 964 Post Road. Store management reported that Refalo had tried to obtain a refund for wireless headphones, valued at $99.99, that were suspected to have been stolen, according to police. Management reported that the security code on the box had been scratched off, apparently with a sharp object, according to police.
Police said when speaking with Refalo, officers observed him place his hand into the back of his pants. When questioned, he indicated that he had a syringe in his back pocket, according to police. Upon inspecting the syringe, officers discovered it contained heroin, according to police.
During questioning, Refalo said a friend had stolen the headphones earlier in the day from CVS in Newtown, according to police.
He was released on a written promise to appear in court on Dec. 18.
