Jose Alcala, 27, of 22 Fenway St., Stamford, was arrested Feb. 14 on charges of misuse of marker plates, operating unregistered motor vehicle and driving without a license.

Police said a Darien officer who was on patrol at 8 p.m. saw Alcala driving north in a green Ford Explorer on Hoyt Street. After running a registration check for the vehicle, the officer learned the license plate did not belong to the Ford Explorer, according to the report.

Once the vehicle was stopped, Alcala told police he recently purchased the car but hadn't been able to register it, police said. The license plates belonged to his girlfriend's car, according to the report.

Additionally, Alcala did not have a valid driver's license, police said. The officer identified the man through his Mexican passport, according to police.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

He was released on a promise to appear in court Feb. 24.
