More programs for kids and adults announced

The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents of Darien. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall, or through the mail. Future Stars Basketball: Darien Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce that Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5-10 this fall on Thursday afternoons from 4—5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. Children will be divided by age. This program will meet for eight weeks from Oct. 19-Dec. 14. The program fee is $175 for Darien residents/$210 for non-residents. This program will include Future Stars’ “Lessons of Life” educational program.
Junior paddle tennis lessons: These clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis. Clinics will utilize fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies of paddle tennis. Paddles will be provided, or participants may use their own. Clinics will run at Weed Beach for eight weeks starting Oct. 11 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for two age groups: 7—10 and 11-14. Please check out the website for a complete schedule of classes. The fee for these lessons is $230 for Darien residents; $276 for non-residents.
Lego in Motion: Calling all Lego enthusiasts and builders to this program. We put fun in motion as students learn how to use wheels and axles, motors, kinetic energy and balance to create numerous contraptions which will be powered with motors and battery packs. All new models to tinker with this year. Classes meet Mondays from Nov .13-Dec. 4 in room 205 of the Mather Center. This program, for children ages in grades K-2, will meet from 4—5:30 p.m. The fee for this program is $130 for Darien residents; $156 for non-residents.
Minecraft Adventure: We may be dodging fireballs from exploding volcanos or hiding from snow giant on Mt. Everest. This will take team work and collaboration as we mine, craft, build and problem solve our precarious situation. Students will be solving this survival adventure on a teacher-monitored closed server. Classes meet Fridays from Nov. 17-Dec. 15 (no class Nov. 24th) in room 205 of the Mather Center. This program, for children ages in grades 2-5, will meet from 4—5:30 p.m. The fee for this program is $130 for Darien residents; $156 for non-residents.
Cupcake Club: Do you love to bake? Then the Cupcake Club is for you. Join instructors from My Cupcake Party for a new class where every week we will create adorable seasonal themed cupcakes. We will cover basic frosting techniques to creating the perfect cupcake for winter and the holidays. This class will provide all cupcakes, decorations and supplies. Please note — this class contains allergens such as nuts, eggs, dairy and gluten. This program will run on Tuesday afternoons from Nov. 14- Dec. 5. Classes for ages 5—9 will meet from 4—5 p.m. and ages 9—13 will meet from 5—6 p.m. in room 205 of the Mather Center. The fee for this program is $130 for Darien residents; $156 for non-residents.
Girls yoga: Yoga is an excellent foundation for everything in life. It enhances sports training and dance; it increases strength and flexibility as well as increases attentiveness and awareness. Your child will also learn to cherish the art of meditation and will relish in the relaxation component that is present in each and every class. Yoga will significantly impact the lifestyle of your child. Our children’s classes incorporate child friendly yoga asana, themes, storytelling, games, music, aromatherapy, and more. Classes will meet on Tuesdays for six weeks starting Nov. 14 at the Mather Center. Ages 11—14 will meet from 4—4:50 p.m. while ages 7—10 will meet from 5—5:50 p.m. Program fee is $105/Darien resident; $126/non-resident.
Archery: Learn basic skills using the classic recurve bow. Practice great shooting habits and learn to put your arrow in the bullseye every time, all in a safe and supportive environment. Boys and girls ages 8—14 will meet this fall on Monday afternoons from 4—4:50 p.m. (beginner), 5—5:50 p.m. (beginner) and 6—6:50 p.m. (intermediate) at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. This program will meet for six weeks from Nov. 13-Dec. 18. The program fee is $90 for Darien residents/$108 for non-residents.
Adult Paddle Tennis Lessons: Certified Platform Tennis Professionals will be offering adult clinics at Weed Beach this fall. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with a mixture of high intensity drills, point-situation drills, technique work and match play. Clinics will run for eight weeks starting Oct. 9 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The fee is $345 for Darien residents; $418 for non-residents for these 1 ½ hour clinics. Three-hour “tune-up camps” will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 30 (9 a.m.—Noon, 1-4 p.m.) and Sunday, Oct. 1 (9 a.m.-Noon) for $110/resident; $130/non-resident at Weed Beach. Please check the website or call the office for specific times and levels for all the clinics. Pre-registration is required for these programs.
Archery: Do you have fond memories of shooting a bow and arrow as a child or have you ever wanted to learn? This adult class will teach the basics of archery using a recurve bow, all in a safe and supportive environment. Program meets on Mondays from 7—7:50 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium for six weeks from Nov. 13- Dec. 18. The program fee is $90 for Darien residents/$108 for non-residents.
