The Darien Nature Center is taking registration for all of its fall programs, which range from weekday drop-off enrichment to after-school nature adventure classes.
For the youngest nature enthusiasts, the center offers two programs. Knee-hi to Nature is a Caregiver and Me program for 2-year-olds. Children and their caretakers will explore trails, learn about animals and enjoy craft projects together. The other popular program is Nature Time for Twos, a drop-off program from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and consists of up to eight children in a classroom with two teachers. Children take hikes on the trails, meet a variety of animals and do craft projects. Children may sign up for one or two days.
Nature's Playroom is the discovery program for 3- and 4-year-olds. Classes are from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Children are invited to stay until 1 p.m. for Lunch Bunch. Designed to complement the nursery school experience, children may register for one day per week.
Another program for 3- and 4-year-olds is Critters and Kids. Children will meet all of the center's animals and explore those living outside as well. The program runs from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Children have the option of staying for Lunch Bunch and may be registered for one day of Critters and one day of Nature's Playroom.
In addition, the center offers three after-school programs for a variety of ages. Sticks and Stones is a drop-off program of outdoor exploration in Cherry Lawn Park. Children ages 3 to 5 meet Tuesday or Wednesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Children in kindergarten and grade 1 meet Tuesday or Wednesday from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Animal Caretakers Club is designed for children in grades 1 to 6 and meets from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Members are responsible for exercising the animals, cleaning their habitats and learning how to care for each animal. At the end of the session, the children choose their favorite animal and do a small presentation for their families. Nature Unlimited is a program for children with special needs and their families. The program will gather once a month to explore the natural world using all senses. Walks through the woods, indoor games and stories, live animals and crafts are all a part of the family program.
