Off-duty officer blows whistle on beach drug deal

DARIEN — Two teens were charged after an off-duty officer saw a suspected drug deal go down at Peartree Point Beach.
On July 17 around 6:30 p.m., the off-duty Darien officer called the police station after he heard a 15-year-old Darien teenager say to someone on the beach, “I’m sitting on a gram,” indicating he had drugs to deal. The 15-year-old then got into a car with another teen and drove off.
The off-duty officer gave a description of the car the 15-year-old got into. An on-duty officer on patrol saw the a car matching this description driving down Peartree Point Road and pull into the beach parking lot. The officer stopped the vehicle and questioned the 18-year-old driver, who said the suspect overheard earlier had just sold him $40 worth of marijuana. The 18-year-old turned the marijuana over to the officer.
Officers then located the 15-year-old suspect who the off-duty officer had heard on the beach and see get into the 18-year-old’s vehicle. The 15-year-old was issued a juvenile summons for illegal distribution of marijuana and turned over to his parents. The driver of the car was issued an infraction of possession of less than a half ounce of marijuana.
The Youth Bureau is following up on the incident.
