The flawlessly designed Salem Straits Colonial at 7 Whaling Road in Darien has been custom-designed and -crafted to offer nearly 5,000 square feet of living space in a private waterfront neighborhood.

Enlisting Darien-based Fox Hill Builders to redesign the property from top to bottom, the previous owners took the home down to the studs.

Over the course of several renovations, the 1970s-era house was reconfigured by revamping the layout, expanding its floor plan with an additional 500 square feet of living space and, ultimately, creating a light-filled home with seamless flow.

A bright two-story foyer opens into a sun-drenched formal living room featuring wide-plank whitewashed floors throughout. An original fireplace with a marble surround is set against a wall of crisp white paneling.

An eat-in kitchen stretching from the front to the back of the home features a gas fireplace and wet bar with a second refrigerator, two freezer drawers and a built-in espresso machine.

The gourmet kitchen has endless cabinetry, a large center island lit by original Simon Pierce glass globes and includes top-of-the-line appliances like a four-burner Wolf range, an induction-heated two-burner cooktop, a Miele convention microwave and Sub-Zero refrigerator.

A comfortable step-down family room has a coffered ceiling and two sets of sliding doors leading to an enclosed-screen porch. Bathed in light, the sunroom features skylights, custom wall sconces and flagstone floors.

The first-floor master suite has a large bay window and sliding doors to a flagstone terrace. The master includes his-and-hers walk-in closets and a elegant master bath with a frameless glass steam shower, a soaking tub with a polished nickel hand shower, his-and-hers vanities and seashell-inspired custom floor tiling.

Off the master is a home office with a large bay window and custom closets that easily could lend it as a sixth bedroom or a nursery.

Upstairs, a workstation provides a convenient spot for homework. A well-designed second-floor laundry room has butcher-block counters and a cathedral ceiling. The first bedroom has its own bath with a basket weave-tiled floor and step-in shower. Two additional bedrooms share a full hall bath with a custom glass-tiled floor, two Carrara marble vanities, a Carrara marble tub and step-in shower.

A fifth bedroom has a full wall of floor-to-ceiling shelving and two custom built-in beds that are suspended with nautical rope.

"They call this the sleepover room. It's where everyone goes when they have friends over," Sarah Keena, a real estate agent with Halstead Property, said.

The pristine full basement provides a space for a large home theater with leather seating and a faux-leopard rug. The lower level also has a mudroom with built-in cubbies for storage and a powder room featuring a custom-designed farmhouse sink with double faucets.

The property is a part of the Salem Straits Association and includes access to a private beach, docks and direct access to Long Island Sound through Scott's Cove.
