The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall or through the mail For information, call 203-656-7325.
Safe boating classes: Professional Marine Education offers an eight-hour course that will meet the requirements to obtain a Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate and Personal Watercraft Operations. The first class will meet on June 3 and 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. and the second class June 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both classes take place at Darien Town Hall. The fee is $90 residents and $108 for nonresidents.
Dog obedience and socialization class: The course will focus on attention, some limited heeling and sits/downs. The class is designed to be an introduction to obedience and socialization. Classes will be run by Rick Weatherstone from Tactical Response LLC. All dogs should be at least 6 months old and must have all their vaccinations. Classes will meet on Saturday for five weeks from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Cherry Lawn Park starting June 21. The fee is $125 for residents and $150 for nonresidents.
Guitar lessons: The class will teach chords, scales, theory and playing favorite songs. Classes meet each Wednesday in Town Hall starting June 18 and running through July 23. Beginners meet from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. while intermediates meet from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. The program is for children ages 8 to 15. The fee is $165 for residents and $198 for nonresidents.
Pee Wee Tennis lessons: The lessons are intended to teach children the game of tennis while using fun drills and age-appropriate games. Classes for ages 3 and 4 meet on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Tuesday from noon to 12:45 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. Classes for ages 4 and 5 meet on Saturday from 12:15 to 1 p.m., Tuesday from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturday classes will meet at Weed Beach while weekday classes meet at Darien High School. Lessons take place June 24 to Aug. 23 for eight sessions. The fee is $130 for residents and $156 for nonresidents and includes a tennis racket.
Blue Wave Kickers Soccer. The focus will be on skill improvement and fun. Jon Bradley, head coach of the DHS boys varsity soccer team, will direct the camps for youth ages 3 to 12 at the Darien Town Hall fields the weeks of June 23, July 14, July 28 and Aug. 11 and 18. The week of June 23 is an International Pro Soccer Camp for children ages 5 to 18. Participants will receive a soccer ball and T-shirt.
All Star FC Soccer. The camps for children ages 3 to 12 will be directed by Leigh Parsons, DHS girls soccer coach, and will begin with stations specifically designed to improve all aspects of a player's game and end with scrimmages to practice the skills and techniques they have learned. Camps will take place at the Darien Town Hall fields the weeks July 21 and Aug. 4.
New Level Tennis. Camps meet from 9 a.m. to noon at DHS in one-week increments starting June 23 through the week of Aug. 18 for children between the ages of 6 and 15. Participants will be grouped by age and level. The fee for one week of tennis camp is $195 for residents and $234 for nonresidents.
Flag Football. Emphasis for ages 6 to 12 is placed on rules, teamwork and fair play. Games and scrimmages occupy the majority of the camp from 9 a.m. to noon at Cherry Lawn Park the week of July 28. The fee for one week of flag football camp is $205 for residents and $246 for nonresidents.
Future Stars Basketball. The camp for children ages 5 to 12 stresses excellence, education, practice and discipline in a fun-filled environment. Camp will meet the week of June 23 and July 21 at the Darien Town Hall. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to noon. The camp fee is $180 for residents and $216 for nonresidents.
Overtime Athletics Sports. The camp for children ages 5 to 12 includes instruction in the fundamentals of traditional sports as well as using Overtime Athletics' signature curriculum incorporating non-traditional sports. Camp meets from 9 a.m. to noon at Darien Town Hall the week of June 30. The fee is $150 for residents and $180 for nonresidents.
Horsemanship. Mead Farm in Stamford and Darien Parks and Recreation will be offering group camps for youth ages 4 to 10. Each camp includes riding, horse care and stable management. The program is designed for riders who did not attend the 2013 Horsemanship Camps at Mead Farm. One-week camps run through mid-August starting the week of June 23 from 8 a.m. to noon. The fee is $550 for residents and $660 for nonresidents
Techstars Technology. TechStars by Computer Explorers are a series of technology classes designed to facilitate science, technology, engineering, mathematics learning. Video game design will meet the week of Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon for ages 8 to 12, Lego in Motion from 1 to 4 p.m. the week of Aug. 4 for ages 5 to 8, Minecraft Desert Island Survival the week of Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon for ages 8 to 12 and Lego Robotics from 1 to 4 p.m. the week of Aug. 11 for ages 7 to 10. The camps run Monday through Thursday in Room 119 of Darien Town Hall. The fee is $225 for residents and $270 for nonresidents.
