To help save the giant panda from extinction, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes at Pear Tree Point School chose `Pennies for Pandas' as their service project.
To launch the project, the entire school was invited to fill containers with pennies and other coins With the money raised, Pandas International will purchase bamboo acreage to replant and restore the panda's natural habitat destroyed during the earthquake of 2008. The Pear Tree Point School Pennies for Pandas drive earned a total of $1,156 thanks to the help of TD Bank in Darien and the People's United Bank in Westport whose counting machines were used to tally the coins.
This amount will purchase slightly more than one third of an acre of bamboo fields. The proceeds from a student walk-a-thon next week will be added to the total.
