DETROIT (AP) — The Downtown Detroit Partnership is seeking public comment and feedback on proposed design concepts for Capitol Park.
Design renderings were to be revealed Monday evening during a community meeting. Toronto-based urban design and landscape architecture firm PUBLIC WORK created the concepts.
More than a dozen buildings currently border the park which is being redesigned to create a more engaging space for residents and visitors, provide park amenities and to help support new and existing businesses in the area.
Groundbreaking for the project is expected to start next spring. Completion of the park's redesign is scheduled for fall 2018.
Stevens T. Mason, Michigan's first governor, is buried in the park. Mason was elected the Michigan territory's first governor in 1835, when the capitol was still in Detroit.
