Special education expert to talk to adoptive families about laws

"Special Education Law and How to Advocate for Your Child" is the topic of a presentation by Dr. Orv Karan, a licensed psychologist with over 35 years of experience in special education. The program, which is open to the public and free of charge, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Family Services Woodfield, 475 Clinton Avenue in Bridgeport.

The program focuses on how schools can support adopted children who qualify for special education services. In addition to a broad overview of the topic, Karan will discuss special education laws and specific services schools are required to provide on behalf of students with learning challenges. Karan also will talk about advocating for these children within local school systems.

The program is sponsored by the Adoption Assistance Program at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Family & Children's Agency of Norwalk provides services to families in Fairfield County through the program. For reservations call the Adoption Assistance Program office at 860-679-4006.
