Thanksgiving puppet workshop celebrates holiday heritage

The Thanksgiving holiday provides an important time for families to gather and celebrate thankfulness and their American heritage.
The Darien Arts Center's Visual Arts department presents Thanksgiving Puppet Theatre on Nov. 19, where children ages 6 and older build puppets to bring home and tell the history and traditions of the Thanksgiving holiday.
During the workshop, puppet master and founder of Norwalk- based Chronic Puppets, Heather Kahlert, teaches students how to make "chopstick puppets." Characters are built with materials provided in class and can come to life again, transforming living rooms into theaters.
The Thanksgiving Puppet Theatre workshop costs $35 and will take place at the DAC's Visual Arts Studio behind Darien Town Hall from 10:30 a.m. to noon. For more information or to register call the DAC Office at 203-655-8683.
The DAC's Visual Arts department offers workshops for many holidays, including the upcoming holiday workshop with long-time DAC birthday party coordinator Joyce Bottone. The workshops provide a creative outlet and result in a special themed decoration. Teachers involve students in the act of creating different methods and media, providing them with an artistic outlet without the commitment of an ongoing class. All workshops are accessible to students of all ages.
Founded in 1975, the Darien Arts Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing visual and performing arts programs and events for the community.
