The FC Connecticut U12 Girls team and U18 Girls team participated in the youth world cup soccer tournament last week in Gothenburg, Sweden and took home gold in the Group B finals. The teams were comprised of girls mostly from Fairfield county.

The Gothia Cup is an annual youth world cup that features approximately 1700 teams from 80 nations with players ages 11-18.

FC Connecticut U-12 Girls were the only U-12 Girls team from the US to participate in the tournament. The U12 Girls defeated SC Victoria from Germany 2-1 to advance to the finals where they defeated Borgeby FK from Sweden 5-3 on penalty kicks. The U-12 Girls team included New Canaan residents Sophie Salmini, Syndey Watchmaker and Anna Zoccolillo.

The U-18 Girls team defeated FJSG Bederkesa of Germany 4-0 in the semi-finals and Sodra Harene IF of Sweden by the same score in the group final.
