Dr. Tarique Perera, of the Life Solution Center of Darien and Contemporary Care of Greenwich, will present an update on the advancements in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, the treatment for a variety of brain-related disorders, during the Darien Chamber of Commerce's Networking Breakfast at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the first-floor conference room at 30 Old Kings Highway S.
TMS is a FDA-approved, nonmedication approach to the treatment of depression. Ongoing studies, as well as Perera's experience with patients, describe its efficacy in treating a wide range of other brain-related disorders, including anxiety, substance abuse and addiction, chronic pain, Parkinson's disease and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Perera will be speaking about advancements in the area of TMS, the range of disorders it treats, and the integration of TMS with other treatments to improve outcomes. Perera predicted the value of its therapeutic potential more than 10 years ago in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology.
"We are just beginning to discover the breadth and significance of its impact," Perera said.
"The success of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is due in large part to medical breakthroughs, but also to the commitment and intelligence of its providers," said Maud Purcell, the center's executive director. Purcell founded the center in 2009 to help people through difficult life transitions, who lack the motivation and emotional resources to seek the necessary array of services. Purcell brought 26 businesses and practices together to provide all the services under one roof.
