Artwork by Darien residents Bruce Horan, acrylic, and Linda George, oil, won first-place awards in the "Alternative Visions" exhibition at the Rowayton Arts Center.

The winners were selected by painter and printmaker Mary Louise Long.

"It was a pleasure to judge this exhibition focusing on abstraction," she said. "Overall, the entire work presented by the artists was outstanding. Each submitted artwork was carefully done, exploring the term of abstraction, in a variety of mediums and styles.

Abstraction can be described as once removed from reality, with some form of the real world apparent ... or totally non-objective, dealing only with shape, composition, and color. The work presented here encompassed both of these descriptions."

Jan Raymond also is a part of the exhibit at the RAC, 145 Rowayton Ave., Rowayton, through March 30. The best in show and first place artwork can be viewed at www.rowaytonartscenter.org.

The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free.
