Cuba is subject of lecture series

“Cuba Ahora,” the 2016 Academic Lecture Series at the Darien Community Association, will examine the past, present and future of the U.S.-Cuban relationship.

The Thursday morning lectures will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 7, 14, 21, and 28 at the DCA. An evening lecture will be held Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m.

The series is to launch with speaker John McIntire, a founder and chairman of Cuba Emprende Foundation, who will describe the economic and social conditions in Cuba and discuss Cuban entrepreneurship.

On Jan. 14, Theodore Piccone of the Brookings Institute will delve into “Obama’s Big Bet on Cuba: Pros and Cons.”

On Jan. 21, Professor Christopher Sabatini of Columbia University will present a historic overview of U.S.-Cuban relations and policy. The final morning lecture on Jan. 28 will feature Francisco Mora, Florida International University, exploring Cuba’s relationships with its Latin-American neighbors. The order of speakers differs from the original flier.

The series is to conclude Friday, Jan. 29, with Ambassador Paul Hare, Boston University and former British Ambassador to Cuba, describing the significant ramifications of a changed U.S.-Cuban policy for the global community, including reactions from Europe, China and Russia.

Tickets for the Thursday morning lecture series are available until Jan. 4, at $100 (non-members) or $75 (DCA members). Tickets for the Friday evening lecture and reception are $30. Some Thursday morning lecture tickets and Friday evening lecture/reception tickets may be available at the door for $30. Christmas Party with Santa

The DCA welcomes Santa back to Mom’s Morning In annual Christmas Party at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18.

Parents and caregivers and their toddlers/preschoolers are welcome to attend the event. The highlight of the party will be the visit with Santa, set against the backdrop of a full-size Christmas tree nestled within the historic DCA Meadowlands home.

In event of lines, there will be seating for adults and cookies and juice to keep toddlers occupied.

The DCA’s Mom’s Morning In program is designed for parents, caregivers and grandparents with energetic toddlers/preschoolers. Every week there will be an activity. Programs are held monthly at 10 a.m. Fridays; reservations are not required. Fees are $10 per child per class. The full calendar is at dariendca.org
