John Dugdale, 54, of 18 Archer Lane, was charged with second-degree larceny Friday, July 20, after turning himself in on a warrant that stems from a complaint made by the Park and Recreation office.
Police said an employee of Securitas, a private security firm the town contracts to provide gate house attendants at Darien beaches, notified the Park and Recreation office that Dugdale, another employee, was allegedly taking money from the town while working at the Weed Beach gate house.
According to the police report, Dugdale was charging nonresidents for daily beach access, keeping their payments and issuing unsanctioned receipts. Darien charges a $40 daily fee for beach access to nonresidents, who are given a receipt by the gate house attendant.
Police said Dugdale admitted to the thefts when questioned. Dugdale indicated he had significant financial issues at the time and was tempted by the cash proceeds.
Dugdale took an estimated $320, the report said.
Dugdale was released on a written promise to appear in court, where he is scheduled to appear July 30.
