YWCA announces two new programs for girls at volunteer recognition event

The YWCA Darien/Norwalk will launch two new programs for local girls starting in fall 2012. These programs include YWCA Mentoring, which pairs an adult female volunteer with a Darien High School girl, and YWCA Girl 2 Girl, a program for sixth and ninth grade girls to help them adjust to their new schools. This announcement was made at the YW's Volunteer Recognition and Annual Meeting at Tokeneke Club June 13 which was attended by close to 100 volunteers and members from Darien.
The YWCA Mentoring program is the first woman-to-girl mentoring program in Darien. The program is looking for Darien adult women to volunteer as mentors to girls who attend Darien High School. The mission of the program is to help build young women's self-esteem and to realize their full potential as they face the challenges and rewards of high school and beyond. Mentors will be required to complete an application and attend training. Mentoring sessions will each be themed, are bi-monthly, will run for one-and-a-half hours each and will take place at the Y office. This program is supported by the CT Mentoring Partnership, part of the Governor's Prevention Partnership designed to keep the state's youth safe, successful and drug-free.
"We're thrilled to begin these two new much-needed programs at the YW for local girls," said Ellen Kirby, executive director of the YWCA Darien/Norwalk. "They embrace our mission of empowering women and complement our existing programs including job search support which provides tools for women to gain employment and parent awareness which provides parenting education for local families."
