Alamo Colleges trustees are soliciting applications to fill the board seat left vacant by the death of James Rindfuss in mid-August.

The board decided Tuesday night to take applications for the District 9 seat until Oct. 30, and expects to select a new trustee in November to serve until the next board election in May. The winner of the election will serve the remainder of Rindfuss’s term, which expires in 2020.

Rindfuss, 80, had chaired the board from 2012 to 2014. District 9 includes the area around Northeast Lakeview College and the suburban cities near Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, stretching to the Tobin Hill neighborhood north of downtown San Antonio.

“Mr. Rindfuss served the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees with distinction and honor. He emphasized student success, and he was a tireless advocate for affordable education,” said Mario Muñiz, a spokesman for the Alamo Colleges. “The Board hopes to find a candidate who will share his passion for quality education and commitment to the community.”

Also up for election in May are the seats of Roberto Zarate of District 5, Gene Sprague of District 6, Yvonne Katz of District 7 and the student trustee position currently filled by Alicia Moreno.
