Investigators worked to clear two major rush-hour crashes Friday afternoon on Interstate 10 East.

At 12:50 p.m. , an 18-wheeler overturned and caught fire on the connecting ramp of Interstate 10 East at U.S. 59, Houston police said.

Whether anyone was injured was unclear. The wreck backed up traffic on the westbound lanes of I-10 and the southbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway, HPD spokesman Kese Smith said.

The ramp was closed as firefighters worked to douse the blaze. The 18-wheeler was the only vehicle involved in the accident, according to Transtar.

At 2:30 p.m., a two-vehicle accident created more traffic headaches on Interstate 10 East westbound at Waco, according to Houston Transtar. One of the vehicles was carrying heavy equipment and struck the Waco Street bridge overpass, causing damage to it and closing three main lanes, officials said.

Traffic was backed up past the 610 East Loop to Mercury Drive, as well as I-10 eastbound and westbound.
