It’s that time again — the day when donating to local nonprofits is never easier because there are hundreds listed at a one-stop online site.
The Big Give is South Central Texas’ 24-hour, high-energy fundraising blitz that takes place Thursday. This year more than 650 participating nonprofit organizations are participating in Bexar and 13 surrounding counties, with choices that range from the environment to the arts, animal welfare and entrepreneurship and beyond.
There is no minimum donation and all gifts are eligible for a tax deduction. Just go to
Officially, the Big Give is all day Thursday, in other words, from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., give or take a minute. But, donors can give Wednesday and it will still count toward nonprofits’ grand total.
Last year, after a series of technical failures, the national Give Local America website crashed and donors in San Antonio and across the country had difficulty giving to nonprofits. Still, the local Big Give managed to raise $4.3 million for 1,055 nonprofits.
Consequently, local leaders held focus groups and town hall meetings with participating nonprofits to find ways to ensure that this year’s campaign avoided a replay. After consulting with local tech experts, the Big Give team reviewed potential platforms and selected GiveGab, a “robust, secure, and easy-to-navigate website,” according to the Big Give website.
The collaboration with GiveGab has also enabled Big Give SA to lower the fees that nonprofits pay to be part of the mass fundraising drive.
Since the campaign began in 2014, 101,000 local donors have given nearly $11 million to more than 1,600 nonprofits, making the Big Give SA one of the most successful giving days in the country, according to the organization.
A new option this year: Donors are now able to use the Big Give platform to give to charities on a monthly basis or other preferred timing.
Yet another: Donors are able to create their own profiles and run their own fundraisers in support of their charity of choice. All of the funds raised through these campaigns will go directly to the agency the donor chooses and the dollars and donations will count toward Big Give prizes. Go to the website to find out more.
