University Hospital is planning a major addition to serve women and children in Bexar County and the surrounding area.

Bexar County Judge Nelson W. Wolff said the growing population of San Antonio, as well zooming growth in adjacent counties, means the time is ripe to expand the hospital.

University Health System and UT Health San Antonio are planning a $390 million Women & Children’s Inpatient Tower next to an existing tower on the South Texas Medical Center campus.

With the added space, UHS would increase the number of patients served and consolidate services for women and children. The new building won’t require raising taxes, officials said.

If approved by Commissioners Court next month, as expected, the tower could open in 2022 next to the Sky Tower.
