Bill Nye the Science Guy became Bill Nye the Dead Guy after news parody website the Onion reported that he'd died in a freak Vinegar/Baking-Soda Explosion. Funny but untrue. (AP)

In one of the few bizarre celebrity death hoaxes we might have actually believed, Johnny Knoxville crossed over in a Jackass stunt gone bad. According to the hoax, "he was being filmed parachuting from a bi-plane whilst eating a catering sized tub of Heinz baked beans, when his parachute failed to open."

Possibly the most famous celebrity death hoax, pre-Internet days, was aimed at Paul McCartney. Theorists concluded that the cover photo of the Abbey Road album showed a funeral procession; Paul, the corpse, is barefoot and has his right foot extended instead of the left. (Apple/Capitol )

Those unusually dangerous cliffs in New Zealand also claimed the lives of Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks. Russell Crowe apparently decided he'd make a statement - his cliff was in Austria. (AP and Getty)

Though his 15 minutes of fame died a long time ago, William Hung was supposed to have sprouted wings after OD'ing on heroin. The hoax also claims he left a suicide note that read: "I have no reason of living . . . my art which is my importance to the best everybody laugh to . . .
