A few parents and students voiced their support for the addition of a school psychologist as they related personal stories of watching friends break under the strain of trying to excel both academically and athletically.

Darien High School senior James Burgoyne said adding a psychologist would help alleviate student stress because they would have a resource readily available when they were feeling overwhelmed.

Fellow DHS senior Marguerite Morgan agreed with Burgoyne's assessment and said academics, more than any other area, are causing students a great deal of stress to the point where their health endangered.

Morgan said she watched as one of friends became mentally unstable as the pressure of competing for a potential spot on a college team became too much too bear.

Parent Patty McCormick also wants the position to remain in the budget because there is a growing number of students who were experiencing a crisis in school and the existing resources aren't adequate enough to handle ever situation.

Since September, DHS and Middlesex had 20 to 30 students struggling with an issue.

A recent check of the underground fuel tanks at Middlesex Middle School, Darien High School, Tokeneke Elementary School and Hindley Elementary School found environmental compliance issues that would need to be addressed in the near future.

The fuel tanks are equipped with electronic monitoring sensors which should be serviced on a yearly basis to ensure they are functioning properly, said Michael Lynch, director of district facilities and operations.

All underground storage tanks which hold petroleum products and are larger than a certain size (1,100 gallons) are subject to Federal and State Statutory requirements.

Additional tests also were performed on the electronic monitoring systems and the tightness of the tanks, the report said.

Even thought the district will be responsible for funding the necessary fixes to the three tanks with electronic monitoring systems, Lynch said both systems at Tokeneke and Middlesex are repairable.

The New England Patriots and New York Giants are just two days from making their Super Bowl appearances as fans of both teams make predictions and friendly wagers on the outcome of Sunday's showdown.

The Patriots and the Giants met during Super Bowl XLII when the Patriots, after going 16-0 in the regular season, were handed their first loss at the hands of Quarterback Eli Manning who led the Giants to a 17-14 victory.

Darien High School Senior Jay Alter made a bold prediction with the Patriots coming out on top by a score of 31-20.

Fellow Republican Selectman David Campbell is also pulling for the Patriots, although he couldn't resist taking a jab at Republican Selectman Jerry Nielsen's loyalty to the Giants.
