STAMFORD — A 70-year-old city man has been accused of keeping a rental car for nearly three years.
Jacques Allouf, of Myano Lane, has been charged with first-degree and second-degree larceny and released after signing a written promise to appear at court.
Property crimes Sgt. Sean Scanlan said investigator Richard Vetter was contacted by the National Insurance Crime Bureau while investigating a 2013 Nissan Altima stolen car claim from Hertz. Vetter was told the vehicle was in the Stamford area.
Allouf rented the car on Christmas Eve 2014 at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, R.I., Scanlan said.
Vetter traced the car to the city’s West Side and found the vehicle on Myano Lane on Wednesday.
Allouf was seen getting into the vehicle and he was stopped for questioning. Scanlan said Allouf even presented Vetter with the original rental agreement, still in the vehicle’s glove box.
Scanlan said Allouf owed $792 for each month he kept the vehicle, totaling $25,344.
The vehicle was worth about $15,000.
