On the Market / A relaxing retreat in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD — The drive from the Merritt Parkway, Exit 44, up Black Rock Turnpike along the Hemlock Reservoir to the white clapboard colonial at 312 Shrub Oak Lane is a relaxing one. Stress seems to melt away with each passing second of the 1.6-mile, three-minute ride from the parkway to the house.
Once there, the relaxation continues on this 2.22-acre level property located halfway down a quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac in the northernmost part of the Greenfield Hill neighborhood near the Easton border. The property is surrounded by trees, providing a private sanctuary that includes the 11-room, 5,598-square-foot house, a heated Gunite in-ground swimming pool, pool house, spa, fire pit, paving stone patio and wood deck. The tranquil setting is augmented by attractive landscaping that comprises mature shrubs and perennial gardens, which this time of year are rife with color from hydrangea, spiraea, astilbe and many other flowers.
Although the house was built in 1985, it feels relevant for today’s lifestyle. It’s almost as if the designer and builder anticipated life in the new millennium. It has nine-foot-plus ceilings and generously proportioned rooms. While it does not have a completely open floor plan, as with new construction today, there is an easy flow and easy access from one room to the next. Newer renovations provided a modern aesthetic and amenities.
A flagstone path leads from the long driveway to the front door, which is framed by sidelights and topped with dentil molding. Inside, the house has a casual elegance. The sizable two-story entrance foyer provides access into the formal living and dining rooms, which are on opposite sides. The dining room has wainscoting on the lower walls. The living room has a fireplace and French doors into the office, which has a wall of built-in cabinetry and bookshelves and a door into the eat-in portion of the newer chef’s kitchen.
Kitchen features include a center island, Calacatta Gold marble counters, white subway tile backsplash, under-cabinet lighting, farm sink, built-in desk area, hardwood floor, oversized pantry, and high-end appliances including a Viking Professional six-burner range top. To the right of the Sub-Zero refrigerator there is a recessed area of shelving for displays of decorative china or dishware. The kitchen is open to the family room, where there is a fieldstone fireplace with a raised hearth and wood mantel flanked by built-in bookshelves and lower cabinetry.
