DARIEN — This time of year it’s hard to appreciate the beauty in the garden since most plants will not flower again until spring and the only color left is what’s found in the few autumn leaves still clinging tight to their branches.
Some things are worth the wait, though, and that includes the 1.26-acre property at 18 Stony Brook Road. Come next spring the level and sloping grounds will come alive with color in the flower beds, helped by the fact that the current owner is an avid gardener. The gardens are designed to provide continuous color throughout the spring, summer and autumn seasons. Her gorgeous perennial gardens are augmented by professional landscaping. Gardens along the front of the house are bordered in Belgium block. The stone outcroppings and stone walls in the front yard are interwoven with tall, mature trees, many of them oaks.
The next family that moves into this taupe-colored New England Cape Cod-style house will blossom in their new home. The house sits back from the road and it looks deceivingly small from the street view. In fact, the house has 4,128 square feet of living space and each of its nine rooms is generous in size.
The location of this house is another plus. Its peaceful location belies the fact that it is less than a mile from town shops and restaurants and the Metro North train station. It is close to Tilley Pond Park, and as the realtor put it, “Every school is a Frisbee throw away from here,” which also means they are within walking distance.
ABOUT THIS HOUSE
The crushed stone driveway, which has ample parking, is marked by two stone pillars topped with lanterns. In front of the two-car attached garage is a narrow pergola draped with wisteria vines. The sailboat weathervane that tops the garage is a subtle reminder that Darien is a coastal community. Long Island Sound and local beaches are close by.
The gardens are not the only places where color is found. The front door is turquoise and opens to reveal a classic and elegant home, built in 1956 and updated for today’s living. Brilliant pops of color are found in the three tastefully updated full baths on the main level. The walls of each one are decorated with hand-painted Portuguese tiles.
Several rooms have bay windows and every window has an attractive view of the greenery that surrounds this house. The family room, which is open to the remodeled kitchen, has sliding doors to a large bluestone patio. A custom-fitted hot tub is artfully placed within masonry work and plantings just off the patio, which is perfect for alfresco dining. The patio can also be accessed from a large mudroom. It has built-in cubbies with storage above and below, a door to the front yard, laundry closet, a door to the garage and another to the full unfinished basement.
The home’s floor plan is flexible enough to allow the option of creating a first floor master suite or au pair/in-law suite from the two en suite bedrooms that are on this main level. Currently, the spacious master suite is on the second floor. Its master bath features Travertine and tumbled marble with a spa tub and steam shower. The second floor has two other bedrooms that share a hall bath that features a marble tile floor in a basket-weave pattern and a marble counter on the vanity.
There are two fireplaces in this house; one in the formal living room and its mantel has dentil molding. The other is found in the family room and it has a surround of red brick. Plenty of windows bring in natural light and they are assisted by skylights in the kitchen and family room.
French doors separate the living room from the kitchen. In the kitchen features include granite counter tops, marble backsplash, eat-in area, and a hardwood floor. The stainless steel appliances include a DCS four-burner range and GE Monogram refrigerator. The formal dining room has built-in shelving.
