The Compo Beach area may not be able to compete with the French Rivera, but the Colonial Contemporary house at 248 Hillspoint Road offers waterfront living with French countryside accents.

The house sits on a 0.33-acre parcel directly across the street from Long Island Sound and Compo Cove near Compo Point and it has its own private, gated beach with about 100 feet of waterfront while the backyard has multi-tiered, hand-wrought stonework terraces, stone staircases, and parterres formal gardens -- designed by an award-winning landscape architect, with boxwood, French lavender and masses of ornamental grasses.

Some would call it the best of both worlds. The front of the house is the more public space where the residents owners can interact with passers-by as people walk, jog, kayak and boat in this active waterfront community. The rear of the house is completely closed off from the rest of the world. The yard is hidden behind a border of arborvitae and other professional landscaping creating a unique space for relaxing and entertaining.

Despite immediate proximity to water, the house is not in a flood zone, according to the realty agent. It was undamaged in past coastal storms, including Superstorm Sandy.

The house encompasses 4,250 square feet of living space on three floors, but it wasn't always so. It was originally built in 1949 as a beach cottage, and in the hands of the current owner, it underwent a major renovation providing a modern interpretation of a classic. In 2010, the house was totally rebuilt and expanded to double its size.

If the rear exterior of the house is reminiscent of a European countryside, the interior calls to mind the sophisticated, spacious and modernized Parisian atelier of a master designer. In fact, the interior has many artistic and unusual features, from its wide-planked antique French wood floors throughout, two French limestone fireplaces, and custom hand-lacquered ceilings, paneled walls, cabinetry, and millwork.

There are interesting architectural and design details throughout the house. The fireplace in the formal living room is wood-burning and has a herringbone brickwork firebox. In the first floor family room there is a gas-fueled fireplace, which also has custom-designed brick patterned firebox. The custom curved, sculptural staircases are reminiscent of undulating waves and the lighting fixtures in the stairwells create ambient, ephemeral art on the wall and ceiling.

Numerous custom eight-foot French doors from various rooms lead to five distinct outdoor entertainment areas for alfresco dining, grilling and simply relaxing. Tall casement windows throughout provide stunning water views. "In any season, in any light, in any tide, it looks beautiful. It's a special view," one person said.

The house is not just artistic but very practical. The space is optimized. The study or library has a wall of built-in bookshelves and a pocket door to a small office. The first floor mudroom has a wall of built-in drawers and cabinets. There are two laundry areas. A laundry room on the first floor has a farm sink and glass-front cabinets. On the third floor there is a laundry closet with stacked washer and dryer.

The gourmet kitchen is on the second floor, along with the living and dining rooms. It has a large center island with a breakfast bar for four. The island and counters are topped with Italian white glass. High-end appliances include two Miele master chef's ovens and warming drawer, 36-inch Thermador refrigerator/freezer, Miele six-burner cooktop and hood, two Miele dishwashers and Miele microwave/convection speed oven.

There are five bedrooms -- two on the first floor and three on the third floor. The private master wing is like a separate apartment and includes the main bedroom with French doors to a balcony, two walk-in closets, a dressing room, and a spa-like master bath with a nickel soaking tub and two Calacatta marble vanities.
