An attractive, updated 20th century Colonial house with a large modern addition sits at 23 Edgewater Hillside in the Compo Beach neighborhood.

The Hillside part of the street name is misleading because the house is on a 0.88-acre level property, but the Edgewater part is right on the mark. The L-shaped house sits along the edge of Sherwood Mill Pond, an 80-acre tidal pond adjacent to Long Island Sound.

The 5,308-square-foot house was designed and built to provide stunning views of the water, sunrises and local waterfowl from virtually every room. Only the second-floor laundry room and one bath are devoid of a water view.

No motorized boats are allowed on the pond but residents can launch canoes, kayaks, rowboats and paddleboards from their backyard. While there is no swimming pool, Mill Cove Beach is an easy walking distance and Compo Beach is not much farther away.

Despite its proximity to beaches, Longshore Club Park, a restaurant and deli, this house is tucked away on a cul-de-sac that provides much privacy.

The original house was built in 1927 and renovations were made in 1987. A major addition was constructed in 1995. The house is understatedly elegant, allowing for informal entertaining or hosting on a grand scale.

Stone pillars stand at both entrances to the semi-circular driveway, which is lined in Belgian block. A red brick path leads to the covered front entrance. Inside, there is an open, flexible floor plan, 9-foot-plus ceilings, custom mill work, numerous windows that frame the dramatic views outside, built-in bookshelves, columns and charming nooks.

Enjoy panoramic view of the ever-changing natural beauty from the large sunroom, patterned red brick patio, raised terrace with a wisteria-covered pergola, and three balconies accessed from the master bedroom suite, a second bedroom in the newer wing of the house and a second floor landing. Watch herons and egrets wade and swans glide by from any one of those relaxing spots.

There is a fireplace in the sunken living room. The formal dining room has a coffered ceiling, built-in china and linen cabinets and a granite-topped serving area. Features in the gourmet kitchen, which is less than two years old, include a center island topped in granite, L-shaped marble counters, a Wolf six-burner range and Sub-Zero refrigerator. Off the kitchen are the family room, library area, eat-in area and mudroom.

A mid-level floor, accessed from the rear staircase, has a built-in desk. That staircase also leads to the large master bedroom wing, which comprises the bedroom with French doors to the balcony, dressing room, huge walk-in closet with organizers, and master bath. There are two more bedrooms in this portion of the house, one of which has a built-in window seat.

In the newer addition there are two more bedrooms, an office and laundry room above the kitchen. One of these bedrooms is en suite and has a built-in desk area.
