Education site startclass.com set out to find the best public high school in every state and concluded that high schoolers looking for a great education should head to Darien.

StartClass used data provided by the National Center for Education Statistics to pick the school with the highest "Smart Rating," which is calculated using the school's average performance on a variety of standardized exams.

At Darien High School, StartClass found that 100 percent of students are proficient in math and reading compared to about 80 percent state-wide.

Schools are only rated against other high schools in their state — for example, high schools in California are only rated against other high schools in California, not against elementary schools in California or high schools in other states.

Earlier in 2015, U.S. News & World Report released its list of the best high schools in the country. Darien High School came in at number eight in Connecticut on that list.

In August of 2015, the Connecticut state Common Core test results were released. The seven-hour test was given to students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11.

In Darien, 85.3 percent of students who took the test met or exceeded the achievement level in English and reading and 75.9 percent met or exceeded the achievement level in math.

By contrast, 39.1 percent of students statewide passed math and 55.4 percent passed language arts.
