Darien rowers win gold at U.S. Club Nationals

Several Darien natives claimed first place at the U.S. Rowing Club Nationals competition in Oak Ridge, Tenn. from Thursday, July 16-20. Representing Norwalk's Maritime Rowing, the rowers powered through multiple heats to earn gold medals in various events.
Guided by Maritime Rowing women's coach Anna Cherednikova, Darien High School junior Gaby Kulesz walked away with two first-place finishes. Kulesz captured first in both the Junior B women's double and quad events. In the quad race, Kulesz teamed with New Canaan High School sophomore Claire Campbell and Riley Mushkin, as well as Caroline Murphy from Joel Barlow in Redding. In addition, Kulesz and Murphy took home the doubles title.

Maritime Rowing handily won the Men's Junior A quad, represented by Darien High School junior David Orner and Rowayton resident Andrew Langalis, a senior at St. Luke's school. Colt DeWolf of Sarasota, Fla. and Gavin Sebald of Dayton, OH completed the quad effort.
On the heels of a recent win in Philadelphia, Darien's Dan Cone and Phillip Bogdanov, Riley Marsh from King School and Aidan Bridwell from Joel Barlow cleaimed first place in the Men's Junior B quad event, as the youngest entries at the Club Nationals.
"The Darien rowers have represented Maritime Rowing extremely well on both a local and national level this season," said varsity coach Yan Venggerovskiy, who coaches the team with Juliya Chagina. "They claimed multiple gold medals in several events thanks to their hard work and focus over the last several months."
