DARIEN—The Blue Wave football team will be without the services of their head coach this Saturday as they take on Brien McMahon at 1:30 p.m.

Darien coach Rob Trifone was suspended for two weeks stemming from an incident during the Wave’s Oct. 1 home game against Norwich Free Academy.

In the second half of Darien’s 45-6 win, a Darien lineman got into a verbal altercation with an NFA player. While the referees tried to separate the two players they both continued to hurl insults at each other.

Finally the referees instructed that Trifone and the Darien coaching staff remove the player from the field, to which they obliged.

As the player walked up to an upset Trifone, the coach chewed him out and slapped him, open-hand, on the side of the helmet.

After the game Trifone was instructed not to partake in team activity while the investigation was conducted. That investigation resulted in a two week suspension.

Because of Darien’s bye last week Trifone will be able to return to practice and the sideline next week before the Wave’s matchup with Danbury.

Darien, the defending FCIAC and Class LL champions, is currently ranked as the No. 1 team in the state and has a 4-0 record.

Coach Trifone was unavailable for comment.@
