After leading the Darien boys basketball team to its first state tournament in 24 years, senior guard Matt Staubi has committed to play Division-1 college basketball at Loyola University in Maryland. He has received a partial scholarship.

The 5-foot-7 guard made his decision last night, after averaging over 20 points a game for the Blue Wave in his senior campaign. Staubi transferred from Rye Country Day School in New York to Darien High School prior to his junior year, where he eventually would earn All-FCIAC honors and an All-State honorable mention.

With the ball in Staubi's hands, the Wave went 12-11 this past winter, a season that culminated in a first-round upset of No. 7 Guilford. The senior captain scored 32 points in the game, including 20 in the first half. Later, he finished with 18 points against No. 10 Avon, who knocked Darien out of the tournament.

In recent off-seasons, Staubi played AAU basketball under his father, Paul Staubi, who played college ball at Lafayette. Staubi's team also sent a pair of other players to the next level, where they will play at Fairfield University and NYU.

The young Darien guard has been described by various recruiting services as a two-star, "heady player" that can score and distribute.

Loyola went 11-19 last year in the Patriot League and lost in the first round of its conference tournament.

More to come.
