Darien wins State Open boys track title

MIDDLETOWN -- Darien won its first State Open in outdoor track and field since 1982 on Monday afternoon at Middletown's Rosek-Skubel Stadium, and the Blue Wave's Nicholas Lombardo and Fairfield Prep's Christian Alvarado were both two-event winners.
Lombardo, a senior, won the long jump (22-feet-6 inches) and high jump (6-4) and finished fourth in the triple jump, which began and ended a bit before the high jump but had a considerable overlap, forcing Lombardo to split his attention. Alvardo won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, which are the metric mile- and two-mile runs.
With the Blue Wave girls winning the team competition as well, Darien replicated Bloomfield's feat last year as winners of both team competitions at the State Open. The Danbury boys and girls teams achieved the rare double in back-to-back years in 2008-09.
The Bloomfield boys were fifth on Monday, with 26 points. Darien won with 65, followed by Windsor (42) in second place, then Fitch (31) and Ridgefield (31). Weston (24.5) was sixth behind senior Simeon Okoro's win at 400 meters (50.41) and the 4-by-400-meter relay's second-place finish.
"We have been on point all day," said Darien boys coach Tyson Kaczmarek as the Blue Wave was on the verge of clinching the team title. "We have big-time athletes and every one of them hit their performance today. We thought we had a chance to win (the State Open) in the winter. Maybe we talked a little too much about it then." Darien won the Class L title indoors but finished fourth at the State Open. The Blue Wave was runner-up to Windsor on June 2 at the Class L meet in Middletown.
"We took it one event at a time. We didn't want to get too far ahead of ourselves," he said.
Alvarado's goal before the meet was to set a personal best time in the 1,600 and watch the 3,200. Unable to set a new personal standard in the 1,600, he decided to conserve energy in that first race and enter the 3,200 as well. Alvarado (4:12.38) held off Wilton's Spencer Brown by 0.05 of a second to take the 1,600 and out-kicked Darien's Alex Ostberg in the final lap to capture the 3,200 by 1.8 seconds in 9:11.54.
Ostberg was part of Darien's victorious 4x800 relay, one of the Blue Wave's four first-place efforts. Senior Spencer McKeough was Darien's other winner, taking the shot put with a throw of 54-4.5 inches.
"The coach gave us the message that we had a job to do," Lombardo said. "And I knew I had an opportunity to do well. I think what I turned in helped give us a chance to win." His long jump was a season's best performance.
Shelton senior Peter Cotto won the discus, entering as the No. 3 seed after winning the Class LL championship last week. His throw of 162-05 was a personal best by 7-4. "With the rain, I had to slow down a bit to stay balanced, and it worked out in my favor," Cotto said.
