DARIEN — The grand tradition of the Greenwich High School boys swimming program is well-earned.

The success doesn’t come by magic or if GHS veteran coach Terry Lowe snaps his fingers.

Victories come from effort and the Greenwich boys swim army is still rounding into form.

The Cardinals improved to 6-0 on the season Wednesday by conquering Darien High 104-79 at the Darien YMCA pool.

“It was a businesslike effort. We have kids who need to step up,” Lowe said. “I need to see more by the time the postseason arrives. Our depth is our calling card this season. The fact is we don’t have as many stars as we’ve had in the past.”

Indeed. The Cardinals don’t simply park their individual swim robes on the bench and proclaim victory.

This GHS squad is short on seniors, but there is quality in the six seniors who are on the roster.

Senior Patrick Clisham was the busiest Wednesday, capturing the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, as well as swimming on two victorious relays.

Senior Aedan Lewis won the 100 free, was outtouched in the 200 IM and swam on two winning relays. Senior Conrad Moss was also part of two winning relays.

“Clisham and Lewis were on point. And all three of our relays were solid,” Lowe said. “The kids know they are the ones that need to make it happen.”

Darien (2-2) has an equally young roster that features only five seniors.

The Blue Wave standout Wednesday was junior Chris Zhang, who captured the 200 IM and was second in the 500 free that was won by Darien sophomore Spencer Erickson.

Sophomore Karl Wadleigh captured the 200 free, while senior Tahj Thompson was second in the 50 free and third in the 100 butterfly for Darien.

Darien also swept the diving behind Wiley Schmidt, Tim Luz and Owen Stevens as Greenwich passed on competing in one of the FCIAC’s shallower diving pools.

“I feel like we’re coming into our own. The young group is starting to jell and figure things out,” Darien coach Dennis Flores said. “We tried some kids in different events and got some good results. We kept pace with Greenwich until the last four events. We ran out of depth. Our freshmen and sophomores swam well.

“We have a lot of potential. I’m very excited about what we can accomplish in the future,” Flores continued. “Coaching is fun for me. I can set the path. It’s refreshing that some of the group is understanding what high school swimming is about.”
