It’s been over a month since the Darien football team claimed the Class LL state championship, but the accolades are still rolling in.

On Saturday, the Walter Camp Foundation honored Rob Trifone with its Coach of the Year award and Mark Evanchick with the Player of the Year award.

Trifone led the Blue Wave to an undefeated season picking up both the FCIAC and state titles along the way.

“I’ve been blessed with an awesome group of young men and an incredible staff,” Trifone said.

“I have been fortunate enough to win several Coach of the Year awards, however the Walter Camp Coach of the Year stands alone as the most special.”

Evanchick set the career state sack record with 66 ½, shattering the mark formerly held by NFL star Dwight Freeney.

“It's an unbelievable honor to win considering the other outstanding players nominated,” Evanchick said.

“I owe a lot to my coaches, who have done so much for me these past four years, my parents and my teammates who have been my best friends since third grade — I can't thank them enough.”
