Beset by a number of injuries, the Darien boys track team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday in a three-school meet at New Canaan High School. The Wave topped the rival Rams 120-20, but fell 95.5-54.5 to FCIAC power Danbury.
Junior Alex Ostberg led the way with two individual event wins in the 1600-meter and 800-meter races, before running the first leg of Darien's victorious 4 x 800 team.
"We had some really solid performances," Darien coach Tyson Kaczmarek said. "For being banged up, there was a lot of good that came from today's meet. I am real happy with the progress so far. We aren't where we need to be yet, but we are getting closer"
The Wave swept all throwing events with wins in discus and shot put from senior Spencer McKeough, and a first-place finish courtesy of junior Arthur Cassidy. McKeough, who set the school record for shot earlier this season, tossed a 51-1, which he later coupled with a 127-5 in the discus. Cassidy launched his javelin 132 feet and six inches to lock up another win for the Wave. Over in the triple jump, Shelby Grant took first with a leap of 37-6. Darien's chief jumper, senior Nick Lombardo, won the 100-meter in 11.2 seconds.
Ostberg, Cassidy, Peter Kreuch and Armstrong Noonan then closed with meet with an 8:21.5 showing in the 4 x 800.
Darien will look to bounce back on Tuesday at Fairfield Warde, where it will compete against the host Mustangs and St. Joseph.
