Wave boys volleyball loses 3-0 at home to Ridgefield

The Darien boys volleyball team (3-3, 3-1 FCIAC) dropped its second consectuve game without winning a set Monday in a 3-0 home contest with Ridgefield (5-0, 4-0 FCIAC). Senior George Phillips produced a 10-kill, 10-dig effort, but it was not enough to close the Blue Wave to within three points at the end of any individual set. The Tigers' Henric Liapuna recorded 19 assists and 10 points over his team's 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 victory.
Darien starter Todd Herget notched nine kills to go with seven points, seven digs and one assist, as Jack Garfield recorded four kills and two points. Last year, the Blue Wave fell 3-1 at Ridgefield, which has yielded only one set to 2014 opponents. Monday's loss for Darien followed a 3-0 road defeat at Joel Barlow back on Thursday, April 17. Despite a competitive showing in the teams' preseason meeting, the team fell handedly to the Falcons, who snapped their visitors' previous three-game winning streak.

Earlier, the Blue Wave had sandiwched a close 3-2 win over rival New Canaan with shutouts of Bassick and Harding. After going up 2-0 on the Rams, Phillips and co. lost back-to-back sets to force a dramatic fifth stanza, which it eventually took 15-11.
Next up for Darien is a road matchup with St. Joseph on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Blue Wave next returns home on Wednesday, April 30, to battle the Fairfield co-op.
