For about two decades, the nonprofit Music for Youth has offered free Saturday afternoon concerts for Fairfield County youth, featuring highly skilled professional performing artists from New York City and environs.
That comes to end with a free Finale Young Persons’ Concert on Saturday, March 10, when the fiery Russian piano duo of Primakov/Lavrova perform at the Pequot Library in the Southport section of Fairfield.
“Music for Youth has presented concerts in the auditorium of Pequot Library for the past 24 years,” explains director Misty Beyer in an email chat. The organization’s mission has always been to “excite, engage and ignite students of all ages.”
“The mission of Music for Youth,” founded by the late Marianne Liberatore, “is to foster a love and knowledge of classical music and world music in young people through free children’s concerts and music programs in local schools, thus encouraging the study, performance, and understanding of music by youngsters of all ages and backgrounds.”
But, as times have changed, so has the focus of MFY, she added. “We are moving our focus to education; So MFY will continue to work in the schools in Bridgeport and on the Emerging Young Artist series, its Meet the Orchestra series and the Friday Night Cafe for Young Artists.”
Saturday’s finale will be staged with two pianos, featuring “a program that will keep you on the edge of your seat.”
The Russian-born duo of Natalia Lavrova and Vassily Primakov was established in 2010. Each began their studies in Moscow, and later at The Juilliard School in Manhattan. They have performed extensively throughout the United States as Yamaha Artists.
A master class for advanced solo and duo pianists will follow the concert, Beyer announced. Registration is required; interested students are asked to email email@example.com for more information. There is a suggested donation of $35 for performing in the master class.
