Darien and Greenwich girls hockey skate to a tie
GREENWICH — The Darien and Greenwich girls hockey teams came into Monday’s matchup hoping to inch closer to securing the No. 1 seed in the FCIAC playoffs.
After three periods and an overtime, nothing was settled as the teams skated off with a 1-1 tie.
Darien (11-2-1, 7-2-1 FCIAC) did secure a FCIAC playoff spot with the tie but really wants to grab that No. 1 spot as to avoid playing either Greenwich or New Canaan in the semifinals.
“Greenwich played a fast-paced game and it was a heck of a high-school hockey game and I am proud of the way we played,” Darien coach Jamie Tropsa said. “Our story all year is that we get a lot of opportunities and we don’t capitalize on them. We have to learn to score goals or we are not going to win the big games.”
Trailing by one, the Blue Wave tied the game with 3:12 remaining on a goal by Shea van den Broek, who skated in from the blue line with the puck, beating goalie Jessie Aselin in the top right corner.
“I came down the right side and I saw an opening to cut into the middle and I got a shot off and it went in, so, I was really happy,” van den Broek said. “This was really good for us. We had a lot of bad luck and a lot of posts and we just needed to get on the board.”
Darien controlled the first two periods, outshooting Greenwich but could not break through with a goal.
Against the flow of play, Greenwich got on the board first late in the second period.
Sophomore forward Emma Wingrove hustled getting to a puck in the corner behind the Darien net.
Winning the puck, Wingrove sent it toward the front of the net, but it hit the back of Darien goalie Hallie Kreppein’s leg, bouncing into the net and giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the second.
“We were working really hard behind the net and ultimately, we scored,” Wingrove said. “I think I was just trying to put it in front, but it ended up going in.”
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Jessie Aselin, Greenwich: The Cardinals senior goalie was on point in this one, stopping 19 shots and keeping her team close all evening.
“Jessie is a gamer, she has been with us for four years and she works her tail off and we have the utmost confidence in her,” Greenwich coach Alex Lerchen said. “We always try to come out and get the first goal and that helped swing the momentum in our favor, but we knew Darien would be rolling into the third.”
