STAMFORD — Normally, losing your star running back in the first quarter would spell doom for a typical football team.

Darien is not a typical football team.

After Mitch Pryor exited with a leg injury early on, the Blue Wave kept on rolling, defeating Stamford 53-7 in a rare Saturday night showdown at Boyle Stadium in Stamford.

Pryor opened the scoring for Darien on 15-yard scamper, but was removed in the opening quarter for precautionary reasons following an awkward landing during a pile-up.

After quarterback Jack Joyce turned two Darien fumble recoveries into touchdowns to Tyler Herget (16 yards) and Nick Green (five yards) it was next man up at the running back position for the Wave.

Junior reserve Andrew Lucas chewed up yards all game, culminating in a touchdown run of 28 yards midway through the second quarter.

A 24-yard touchdown pass from Joyce to Green with 10 seconds left in the first half made it 33-0 Darien heading into the break.

Brian Minicus recorded the Wave defense’s third turnover with an interception at the Stamford 18 early in the third. Lucas would take it in from 13 yards out on the resulting possession.

On the ensuing kickoff, Darien jumped on a loose ball and Lucas twisted the proverbial knife with a 20-yad score on the next play to put the Wave up 47-0.

Stamford got on the board early in the fourth on a 21-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Isiah Johnson to junior Daniel Collazo.

Third-string Darien running back Will Kirby rounded out the scoring with a 58-yard romp straight up the middle.

Darien has a bye next week, then will face its toughest test to date at Staples (3-0) on Oct. 13. With two weeks to prepare and key players like Pryor, Max Grant and Sean O’Malley on the brink of returning, it’s a scary thought that Darien, the winners of 29-straight, may be getting even stronger. @reportedbytheAP
