New Canaan boys swimming tops rival Darien, 99-87
DARIEN—Rivalries always bring the best out in high school teams.
And few rivalries are more renown than New Canaan High School vs. Darien High School.
In any sport.
The jammed capacity crowd at the Darien YMCA pool Friday was treated to top notch performances as the New Canaan boys swim team defeated Darien, 99-87.
“Our group came together today. It was a 100 percent team effort,” said New Canaan’s veteran coach David Fine. “Darien is such a talented team. They tied Greenwich early in the season. We looked at it and we feel we can compete with the top teams in the FCIAC.”
NEW CANAAN KEPT GRINDING TO VICTORY
The 12-event meet was tied 31-31 after four events. Darien led 61-49 after seven events.
When New Canaan’s Jake Ritz and Jackson Oehmier went 1-2 in the 500 free, Darien’s lead was cut to 65-61.
After the tenth event, the 100 backstroke, the score was deadlocked at 78-78.
New Canaan’s Peter Sloan and Bart Codd went 1-3 in the 100 breaststroke. The NC foursome of Luke Stewart, Jackson Oehmier, Daniel Lu and Ritz captured the 400 free relay by about four seconds to secure the Rams’ win.
Ritz won the 200 free, 500 free and anchored two victorious relays. Stewart captured the 200 IM, 100 butterfly and swam opening leg on the two winning NC relays.
“This was the team effort we had talked about,” NC’s Fine said. “Everybody made a difference today.”
DARIEN READY FOR POSTSEASON
It was a memorable afternoon for the Blue Wave, which had nine seniors honored on Senior Day.
Senior diver Wiley Schmidt set a new point mark in Darien High boys diving Friday by amassing 328.55 points on his way to victory. Fellow senior diver Owen Stevens was runnerup Friday with 320.70 points.
Senior Chris Zhang took first place in the 100 free at 49.22.
“Our seniors have been critical to our success,” said Darien coach Liz Blau. “They’ve set a tone in our workout regimen. And they’ve been good when rallying the troops.”
Darien’s future looks bright as sophomore Connor Martin took first place in the 100 butterfly, the 50 free and swam a leg on the Blue Wave’s victorious 200 medley relay as well as in the runnerup quartet in the 400 free relay.
“The entire group has been training so hard. I’m so proud of the team’s effort today,” Blau said. “This meet is excellent preparation for the upcoming postseason.”
