Charge upped in broken nose breakup case
BRIDGEPORT - A Fairfield University student/ amateur swim suit model, who gained international attention when police said she broke her rugby player boyfriend’s nose when he tried to break up with her, just wants to be left alone.
“She is asking that her privacy be respected at this time,” said Frank Riccio II following a brief court hearing Monday for 19-year-old Kathryn Mahoney.
State prosecutors upped the charge against Mahoney, of Nashua, N.H., from third to second-degree assault, a felony, because of the seriousness of the victim’s injuries.
During Monday’s hearing, Superior Court Judge Kevin Doyle agreed to modify the no contact provision of the protective order placed on Mahoney to allow for any incidental contact the two might have at the school.
“The facts as reported in the media are incorrect and once the court hears all the relevant facts we are confident the case will be resolved in Miss Mahoney’s favor,” Riccio said as he left the Golden Hill Street courthouse.
Both Mahoney and her boyfriend, whose name is being withheld by Hearst Connecticut Media, are freshmen at Fairfield University. The boyfriend , a rugby player from the Isle of Wight in Great Britain, posted a photograph of his bloody nose on Snapchat with the caption, “The Katie thing comes with a broken nose, lol.”
Until her arrest, Mahoney posted photographs of herself wearing swimsuits on Barstool Sports.
Police said on March 1 they were called to the Fairfield University campus. The boyfriend told officers Mahoney had punched him in the nose and stomach after he told her he wanted to break up with her, police said. He then ran to a friend’s dorm room for help.
