The Darien Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Stephen Falcone announced the appointment of Michael Feeney as director of finance for the Darien Public Schools at Tuesday night's meeting.

He will succeed Richard Huot, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Feeney has had a productive career in both town and educational finance management. He currently serves as the chief operating officer for Stratford Public Schools, a position he has held since 2010. In that role, Feeney has been responsible for managing a $93 million budget, developing capital improvement plans, and overseeing financial operations, human resources, grants, technology, building projects, transportation and food services. He also serves as the lead district administrator in the absence of the superintendent.

Prior to his work in schools, Feeney was the chief administrative officer and the chief financial officer for the City of Bridgeport. Among his responsibilities were managing the city's operating budget and pension fund, developing capital improvement plans and negotiating labor contracts with 13 municipal bargaining units. Prior to his work in Bridgeport, Feeney worked as a town administrator in Stratford and Milton, N.H.

Feeney is a member of the Connecticut Association of Business Officials, the Government Finance Officers Associations and the Connecticut Town/City Managers Association.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Maine at Orono and a Masters of Public Administration from Western Kentucky University.

He will assume his position after July 1.
