"It was a great team effort between secret services, the U.S. Marshals, Darien and state police using all the information that we had developed," Lt. J. Paul Vance
Commanding Officer of the state police, said. "What was great is that we were able to take him into custody without incident."
Vance could not say how Stafford ended up in Darien all the way from Illinois but did say it was something "he would have to explain to the judge." Vance added he was simply happy the operation went so smoothly with no one getting hurt and Stafford not resisting at all.
"There were no issues whatsoever. It went perfectly and was handled very professionally," Vance said. "It was a job well done by all with this law enforcement cooperation and we were able to take this individual off the streets."
The Record reported that according to Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Massey, Stafford made the threats between Jan. 1 and March 7, 2006.
Stafford was indicted Aug. 18, 2006, for knowingly and willfully depositing for conveyance in the mail one or more letters containing a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon President Bush, the article stated.
According to the Record, Stafford allegedly wrote, "If you were to find a bullet waiting for you once you looked out of the white house how would that feel while you were looking out your window. Do you know what Nitrometheane, Tovax, cannon fuses, a few barrels, a spool of shock tube and Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer will do. . . Well do you Mr-President. Well Id say not till it's used on you or yours. This is your first and last warning from me and the National Socialist Movement of Freedom. So bombs away you're a coward bastard."
