A New York husband and wife got a rough start on moving day in Darien when $140,000 in jewelry, family heirlooms, silverware and expensive handbags went missing from a moving truck.

Darien police are investigating the incident, Police Detective Mark Cappelli said.

The 36-year-old husband and 35-year-old wife told police the box was on a truck that left their apartment in New York and was delivered to their new home at Avalon Darien on Hollow Tree Ridge Road, Cappelli said.

The moving company used three of its own employees and a day laborer from Norwalk to transport the couple’s belongings to Darien, Cappelli said. The truck made an intermediate stop at a warehouse to pick up other belongings, but nothing was taken off the truck there, Cappelli said.
