DARIEN — In a new twist on tradition, supporters got a hand from the community at large helping to collect the holiday wreaths that had been laid this season at veterans.

“This is the first time we’ve tried to get community involvement in taking them out,” Phil Kraft, past commander of VFW Post 6933, said of 2,184 wreaths that were laid out on Dec. 17 and are usually attended to by a specific group, such as the scouts or Brownies.

This time two dozens helpers of all ages pitched in, aided by trucks from local landscaper Dave Gartrell.
