BOE approves 6.38 percent increase, denies foreign language funding
The Board of Education approved a budget that was less ambitious than its original proposal as cuts, some in areas that parents didn't want to see, were made before the budget goes before the Board of Finance.
One of the areas that saw the greatest cuts at Tuesday night's meeting was the foreign language program which included five additional teachers at each of the elementary schools. Each position was budgeted for $61,000 before board members cut the proposed funding in a 7-2 vote.
The total budget for the 2011-2012 year would be $76,079,074 if approved by the Board of Finance and the Representative Town Meeting.
The budget represents a 6.38 percent increase over last year's budget.
