First Congregational Church in Darien will host a community-wide outdoor Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 11:15 a.m.

The blessing will take place on the church's front lawn at 14 Brookside Road after the 10 a.m. service, which is themed along the lines of St. Francis and "all God's creatures."

Pets of all kinds will be welcomed as the Rev. Dale Rosenberger will offer a special blessing for each individual animal and its family.

The tradition of blessing animals is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures and is customarily celebrated close to St. Francis' Feast Day, which is Oct. 4.
